In the video, he showed his SUV's digital instrument cluster. The numbers were shocking. "I showed you guys how our car's mileage dropped straight from 17 kmpl to 9 kmpl," he said. "And today, it has gone down to around 5 kmpl."

He also said a full tank that used to give about 800 kilometres of range now showed only 480 kilometres. "I don't know when this car will break down," he said. "Nowadays I am so scared of refilling petrol."
The video spread like wildfire across X, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. People started sharing their own E20 horror stories. The debate was no longer just about fuel. It was about trust.
Why Did His Mileage Drop So Much?
I spoke to a few mechanics. I read through forum posts. The consensus is that a drop from 17 to 5 is extreme. Unusually extreme.
Santosh Iyer, managing director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, offered a plausible explanation in an interview. He said the approved ethanol blend may not be the real culprit. The real problem could be fuel adulteration.
"Someone may be dispensing E30 or some other mix," he said. If fuel does not meet quality standards, engine performance suffers regardless of the manufacturer's specifications.
That made sense to me. If the ethanol content at a particular pump is higher than 20%, the car's engine management system cannot compensate. The result? Poor mileage. Rough running. Potential damage.
What Mercedes-Benz Actually Said?
On July 12, Mercedes-Benz India posted a "Customer Advisory" on X. The statement was short. Direct. No ambiguity.
"At Mercedes-Benz, customer safety, vehicle reliability and performance are of paramount importance to us. All Mercedes-Benz petrol BS VI vehicles are materially compatible with E20 fuel and certified accordingly by relevant authorities."
The company also added: "We are happy to support customers with any technical queries. Mercedes-Benz remains committed to sustainable mobility."
No mention of Joshi by name. But everyone knew what it meant.
What Does "Materially Compatible" Actually Mean?
I looked this up. "Materially compatible" is a technical term. It means the materials used in the engine, fuel system, hoses, pipes, seals, and gaskets have been tested and certified to withstand E20 fuel without degrading.

It is not just marketing. It is engineering. The company started working on ethanol compatibility as early as 2012-2013. By 2018, when they shifted to Euro 6 standards, all vehicles were made E20-compatible—two years ahead of the industry deadline.
Since 2024, the company has been issuing E20 compliance certificates for all models, including imported CBUs, after testing with the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).
Which Models Are Covered?
If you own any BS VI petrol Mercedes-Benz, you are covered. All BS VI vehicles sold since 2018 are certified.
Some newer models, including the latest S-Class Hybrid, are also compatible with E25 fuel. That is the next ethanol blend the government is testing.
The Mileage Question
Everyone wants to know: will E20 reduce my car's mileage?
The honest answer is yes. Slightly.
Ethanol contains less energy than petrol. That is basic chemistry. When you blend 20% ethanol with petrol, the energy content per litre decreases. Some reduction in fuel efficiency is expected.

Iyer addressed this directly. "There may be a slight drop in efficiency," he said, "but it is not as though the government has suddenly introduced 20% ethanol overnight. These cars have been running on 15% ethanol for many years."
The company has not faced any significant technical issues linked to E20 petrol. Dealerships have received more customer queries, but concerns typically ease once buyers are informed that their cars are E20 compliant.
What I Learned About Fuel Quality?
This is the part that surprised me. The problem may not be E20 itself. It may be inconsistent fuel quality at some retail outlets.
Iyer said it clearly: "Someone may be dispensing E30 or some other mix." If the ethanol content exceeds the prescribed limit, it could affect engine performance regardless of the manufacturer's intended fuel specification.
That is not a Mercedes-Benz problem. That is a fuel quality problem.
What You Can Do
Use fuel from reputable stations. Stick to established, trusted outlets. Avoid pumps with questionable quality standards.
Check your vehicle's documentation. If you are unsure whether your car is BS VI compliant, check your registration or owner's manual.
Monitor your mileage. You may notice a slight drop. That is expected. If you experience a dramatic drop like Joshi did, get your car checked. It could be a fuel quality issue.
Contact Mercedes-Benz if you have concerns. The company has explicitly stated that its technical teams are available to address any queries related to fuel compatibility.
The Bigger Picture
The Indian government has been aggressively pushing ethanol blending. The original target for nationwide E20 adoption was 2030. That was advanced to 2025. India completed the rollout ahead of schedule.
The government defends the programme strongly. According to official statements, the ethanol blending initiative has strengthened the sugar industry, increased farmers' incomes, and helped India save more than ₹1.90 lakh crore in foreign exchange since 2014-15.
What Mercedes-Benz Wants
While the company supports the E20 initiative, it has urged the government to adopt a phased approach before increasing ethanol blending beyond 20%.
Iyer told the Economic Times: "Give us time, allow us to change what is required up to a reasonable extent." He also recommended that petrol pumps offer multiple fuel grades during the transition, giving owners of older vehicles the option to choose the appropriate one.
The challenge lies less with newer vehicles and more with India's large in-use vehicle parc, much of which was not originally designed for higher ethanol blends.

If you own a Mercedes-Benz BS VI petrol vehicle, you have nothing to worry about. Your car is certified for E20 fuel. The company has tested it. The authorities have approved it.
