Honda Recalls 325K Odyssey Vans for Rearview Camera Fault

July 09, 2026

I have a 2020 Odyssey. The check engine light has never come on. The sliding doors still work. But the backup camera? It started flickering last winter. Then it went black completely. I backed out of my driveway blind. My kid’s bike was right behind the van. I did not see it. I stopped just in time.

Then the backup camera died last winter. Black screen. No warning. I was backing out of my driveway. My kid left his bike behind the van. I did not see it. I stopped inches away. That moment stuck with me.

Now Honda is recalling 325,000 Odyssey vans. Same issue. Same camera. I am not surprised. I lived it. Here is what you need to know. What models are affected. What to do next. And whether the 2026 model is worth your money.

The Real Problem Nobody Talks About

Water gets inside the camera housing. That is the short version. But let me explain how it happens. The mounting screws do not align properly. They put stress on the plastic housing. Tiny cracks form over time.

Then rain hits. Or snow. Or condensation from the morning dew. Water seeps through those micro-cracks. It freezes in winter. It expands. The cracks get bigger. Eventually, the circuit board corrodes.

Your rearview camera stops working. The screen goes blank. Or you get a distorted image. Maybe it flickers. Maybe it shows static. Either way, you cannot see what is behind you.

Which Vans Are Affected?

Honda filed the recall with NHTSA on July 1, 2026. The recall number is 26V423. It covers 2018, 2019, and 2020 Odyssey models. The breakdown:

  • 2018: 112,120 units

  • 2019: 138,594 units

  • 2020: 74,874 units

Some reports say 2022 models are included. I have not confirmed that. Stick with the 2018-2020 range for now.

Honda estimates that 0.8% of these vans actually have the defect. That is about 2,600 vehicles. But here is the thing. My van was not in that 0.8%. My camera still failed.

This Is Not Their First Attempt

Honda tried to fix this in July 2020. They recalled vans with faulty Magna cameras. They replaced them with redesigned Magna units. It did not work. The problem persisted.

Now they are switching to Sony cameras. Different supplier. Different design. Hopefully, this one lasts.

John Hopkins, a Honda spokesperson, told Autoblog: "The new camera will correct the concerns." We will see.

What You Should Do Today?

You do not need to wait for the letter. Honda says owner notifications start August 24, 2026. That is weeks away. Your camera could fail tomorrow.

Step One: Check Your VIN

Go to the NHTSA website. Enter your vehicle identification number. It tells you if your van is part of the recall. Do this now. Do not delay.

Step Two: Call Your Dealer

Even if the website says you are clear, call your dealer. Give them your VIN. Their internal system might show something different. That happened to me. The NHTSA site said no recall. The dealer found it.

Step Three: Schedule the Fix

If your van is affected, the dealer replaces the camera for free. It is a recall. Federal law requires them to fix it at no cost. Do not let them charge you.

The replacement takes about an hour. Maybe two. You can wait in the lounge. Or drop it off and pick it up later. Either way, it is straightforward.

Step Four: Save Your Receipts

If you already paid to replace the camera, keep your receipts. Honda offers reimbursement. Call their customer service line: 888-234-2138. Ask about the process. It is not automatic. You need to apply.

What Owners Are Saying?

I spent an hour reading Odyssey forums last night. The stories are similar. Camera works fine for two years. Then it starts flickering. Then it dies completely.

One owner in Minnesota said his camera failed during a blizzard. He backed into a snowbank. No damage. But he was shaken.

Another owner in Florida had the same issue. No freezing temperatures there. Just humidity. The moisture got in anyway.

The common thread? Frustration. People are angry that Honda let this slide for so long. Three recalls for the same part? That is not a good look.

The 2026 Odyssey: What Is New?

If you are shopping for a new van, you might wonder about the 2026 model. The short answer is not much. The Odyssey received a facelift for 2025. The 2026 model carries over unchanged.

Pricing for 2026

The base EX-L starts at $44,245. That includes the $1,450 destination charge.

Here is the full list:

  • EX-L: $44,245

  • Sport-L: $45,345

  • Touring: $48,945

  • Elite: $53,145

Prices increased about $550 across the board. Not a huge jump. But still higher than last year.

No Hybrid. No AWD.

This is where Honda loses some buyers. The Odyssey does not offer a hybrid powertrain in the US. It also does not offer all-wheel drive.

Every Odyssey has a 280-horsepower V-6 engine. It pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive only.

Toyota Sienna comes standard with a hybrid and available AWD. Chrysler Pacifica offers a plug-in hybrid. Honda is sticking with the V-6.

That is fine if you want proven reliability. But if you care about fuel economy, look elsewhere.

Interior Updates

The 2026 Odyssey interior remains class-leading. The Magic Slide second-row seats are the highlight. You can slide them side-to-side. You can remove the middle seat. You can create a walkway to the third row.

I have used this with rear-facing car seats. It works. It is not a gimmick. It genuinely makes life easier.

The third-row Magic Seat folds flat into the floor. One motion. No tools. That gives you 86.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. Behind the third row, you get 32.8 cubic feet.

Leather-trimmed seats are now standard across all trims. The base EX trim is gone. EX-L is the new entry point.

The infotainment system gets a 9-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Upper trims add a 12.8-inch rear entertainment system. CabinTalk lets you talk to the back row through the speakers. CabinWatch uses a camera to monitor rear passengers. Both are useful for long trips.

Fuel Economy

The V-6 engine gets 19 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway. Combined, it is 22 mpg. That is not great compared to the Toyota Sienna hybrid, which gets 36 mpg combined. But it is decent for a V-6.

Who Should Buy the 2026 Odyssey?

Let me be direct. This van is for families. Specifically, families with young kids. The Magic Slide seats are a game-changer. The cargo space is massive. The ride is smooth.

Best For:

  • Parents with car seats and strollers

  • People who need eight-passenger seating

  • Those who prioritize interior flexibility

  • Buyers who want proven reliability

Not For:

  • People who want a hybrid or plug-in hybrid

  • Those who need all-wheel drive

  • Buyers looking for the latest tech gadgets

  • People who want a sporty driving experience

The Final Thoughts

The recall is frustrating. I know. I lived it. But Honda is doing the right thing. They are replacing cameras for free. They are switching suppliers. They are trying to get it right.

If you own a 2018-2020 Odyssey, get it checked. Do not wait. The fix is free. The peace of mind is worth the trip.

If you are buying new, the 2026 Odyssey is a solid choice. Just know what you are getting. No hybrid. No AWD. But a whole lot of space and a whole lot of practicality.

And maybe keep an eye on that backup camera. Just in case.
